About this condition

This is a collection of pus or inflammatory tissue (granuloma) within or around the spinal cord that can compress nerves and cause permanent damage. It usually results from bacterial infections, tuberculosis, or fungal infections spreading to the spine. Emergency surgery and antibiotics are often required to prevent paralysis.
