About this condition

Acute tonsillitis is an infection causing inflammation and swelling of the tonsils, the two lymph nodes at the back of your throat. It can be caused by viruses or bacteria and makes swallowing very painful, often accompanied by high fever. While viral cases resolve on their own, bacterial tonsillitis may require antibiotics, and recurrent cases might need surgical removal of tonsils.
