About this condition
This is a severe form of influenza caused by a new strain of influenza A virus that has also infected the lungs causing pneumonia. It spreads rapidly from person to person and can cause serious breathing problems, organ failure, and death if not treated promptly. Immediate hospitalization with antiviral medications and oxygen support is often necessary.
