About this condition

This is a medical emergency where fluid rapidly accumulates in the air sacs of the lungs, making breathing extremely difficult. It is usually caused by heart problems but can also result from high altitude, kidney failure, or lung injury. Patients need emergency treatment with oxygen and medications to remove excess fluid.
