About this condition

Septic arterial embolism occurs when infected blood clots or bacteria-filled material breaks off from an infection site (often heart valves) and travels through arteries to block blood vessels elsewhere. This causes both loss of blood supply to tissues and spread of infection to new body parts. It is a life-threatening condition requiring urgent antibiotics and sometimes surgery.
