About this condition
An extremely serious stroke where both vertebral arteries at the back of the neck are blocked, cutting off blood supply to critical brain structures controlling breathing, consciousness and vital functions. This is more severe than single-artery strokes with high risk of death or severe permanent disability. Immediate intensive emergency care is absolutely critical for any chance of survival.
