About this condition
This is a stroke caused when a traveling blood clot (embolism) lodges in one of the brain's arteries, suddenly blocking blood flow. Unlike clots that form in place, emboli typically originate elsewhere in the body, often from the heart, and travel through the bloodstream to the brain. This medical emergency causes sudden symptoms like weakness, speech problems, or facial drooping and requires immediate hospital treatment.
