About this condition
Rh isoimmunization occurs when an Rh-negative mother's antibodies attack the red blood cells of her Rh-positive newborn baby, causing severe jaundice and anemia. This condition develops when the mother was sensitized during pregnancy or previous births and her immune system treats the baby's blood as foreign. Modern screening during pregnancy and preventive injections have made this condition less common, but affected babies need immediate treatment to prevent serious complications.
