About this condition
Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy is a rare genetic disorder causing worsening seizures and muscle jerks that typically begins in teenage years. When status epilepticus occurs, seizures become continuous and don't stop, creating a life-threatening medical emergency. This non-intractable form may respond to medication but requires immediate hospital care when prolonged seizures happen.
