About this condition
This is a life-threatening emergency where enlarged veins in the food pipe (esophagus) rupture and bleed, usually due to liver disease or cirrhosis. The bleeding can be massive and cause vomiting of blood or passing black stools. Immediate medical attention in a hospital setting is critical to stop the bleeding and prevent death.
