About this condition
Central pontine myelinolysis is a rare neurological condition that occurs when sodium levels in the blood change too rapidly, damaging the protective covering of nerves in the brainstem. It most commonly happens in people with severe malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, or during rapid correction of low sodium levels. Symptoms include speech problems, confusion, and difficulty with movement.
