About this condition

Brain death is the complete and irreversible loss of all brain function, including the brainstem that controls breathing and other vital reflexes. The person cannot survive without mechanical ventilation and has no possibility of recovery. This is a legal and medical determination of death, distinct from coma or vegetative state.
